2012 Forecast:
Rick Hawn was the season 4 welterweight runner-up before announcing his move to the lightweight division for 2012. Hawn was an accomplished Judoka before entering MMA, making it all the way to the 2004 Olympic Games. Hawn made his MMA debut in 2009, winning his first 8 fights before ultimately signing with Bellator in 2010. Hawn won his Bellator debut by knocking out LeVon Maynard before moving on to compete in Bellator’s season 4 tournament. Hawn won his first round matchup over tough Englishman Jim Wallhead via unanimous decision. Hawn moved on to face former Bellator welterweight champion Lyman Good, winning a razor-thin decision that sent him to the finals opposite established veteran Jay Hieron. Hawn gave Hieron all he could handle and looked to be on his way to a decision victory, but the judges controversially sided with Hieron via split decision.
Hawn announced his intentions to drop down to lightweight following his first career defeat. The cut to 155 should immediately benefit Hawn as he struggled a bit against bigger, stronger wrestlers. Hawn has excellent boxing and has shown to be a tough, composed fighter in the cage. Hawn will need to display better finishing skills against higher-level opposition, but the move down to 155 should make Hawn a force to deal with.
