2012 Forecast:
Patricio “Pitbull” Freire was the season 4 winner of the Bellator featherweight tournament after falling just short in season 2. Freire, training alongside his brother, lightweight Patricky Freire, made his MMA debut in 2004 before even turning 18 years old. Freire found instant success on the Brazilian independent circuit, going 12-0 overall with wins over Paulo Dantas and Gleristone Santos. Freire signed with Bellator in 2010, making his debut in the Bellator season 2 featherweight tournament. Freire took out first round opponent William Romero via submission before moving on to win a decision over season favorite Wilson Reis. Freire moved on to the finals where he lost a close split decision to Joe Warren. Freire had Warren rocked multiple times in the bout, but could not put him away as he badly gassed out in the fight’s final rounds. After staying on the sidelines for nearly 9 months, Patricio returned with a vengeance to TKO George Karakhanyan in the opening round of the season 4 featherweight tournament. Freire followed that up with a dominating knockout victory over Wilson Reis, propelling him to the finals opposite Daniel Straus. Freire defeated Straus in a tough, unanimous decision and now awaits his championship shot against the winner of Pat Curran or Joe Warren.
Freire looks to be a future champion as he possesses huge finishing power. Freire, despite being a bit undersized, has proven to be a handful for bigger, stronger wrestlers. Freire’s only weakness seems to be his conditioning, but he seems to be better about pacing himself as showed in his recent fight with Straus. Freire will likely be considered the favorite to win the title, regardless of opponent as he heads into his 2012 Bellator featherweight championship fight.
