2012 Forecast:
Pat Healy’s career has quietly enjoyed a resurgence as he is currently riding a 6-1 run with wins over Lyle Beerbohm and Maximo Blanco. Healy’s early career was marred by inconsistency, struggling to an 11-11 overall record, despite submission wins over Dan Hardy and Paul Daley. Nearly all of Healy’s losses on the independent circuit came to UFC veterans as he was giving up a ton of experience and size to his welterweight competition. Healy’s career began to improve following a 4-fight win streak, highlighted by victories over Tiki Ghosn and Carlos Condit. Healy was signed by the UFC in 2006, making his debut at UFC Fight Night 6 against Anthony Torres. Healy lost via stunning 1st round submission and was released shortly thereafter. Healy eventually found a home in the IFL promotion, amassing a 2-2 record, defeating Mike Guymon, while losing to Rory Markham and Jake Ellenberger. The IFL went under and Healy moved on to Canada’s MFC promotion. Healy scored a supposed upset submission victory over former MFC stalwart Ryan Ford to win the MFC welterweight title. The MFC immediately booked a rematch, which Healy won again this time via decision. Healy left the MFC after his wins over Ford, losing his next fight against future UFC prospect T.J. Waldburger. Healy decided to finally cut down to lightweight in 2010, winning his first fight at his new weight class against Sidney Silva before ultimately signing with Strikeforce later that year. Healy picked up a decision win over grappler Bryan Travers before losing a tough fight to top contender Josh Thomson via submission. Healy bounced back by defeating formerly undefeated rising prospect Lyle Beerbohm in a close decision. Healy followed that up with two more impressive wins over Eric Wisely and dangerous prospect Maximo Blanco.
Healy is likely nearing title contention in the thin Strikeforce lightweight division. Considering champion Gilbert Melendez has nearly cleared out the division, Healy could be next in line with one or two more wins. Healy has proven to be a force at 155 and has defeated some high-level opposition over the years while fighting at welterweight. Healy is still surprisingly young (28 y.o.), despite having 42 fights of experience. Healy still struggles at times against better grapplers or strikers, but he is as tough as they come. If Healy can continue to put all the pieces together, he has the talent and experience to be a dangerous opponent for any viable lightweight contender or prospect.
