2012 Forecast:
Pat Curran has already won two Bellator tournaments, and after recently upsetting featherweight kingpin Marlon Sandro, he has his sights set on the featherweight championship. Curran is just 24 years old, but has proven to be wise beyond his years as he has continually held his own against tough veteran competition. Curran, the younger cousin of WEC veteran Jeff Curran, made his MMA debut in 2008. Following a 10-3 record on the independent circuit, Curran signed with Bellator in 2010. Curran took part in Bellator’s season 2 lightweight tournament and was considered to be a heavy undeog due to the presence of newly-signed Roger Huerta and a host of other prized prospects and veterans. Curran defied the odds by scoring an opening round knockout of Georges St.Pierre’s protege Mike Ricci. Curran moved on to face Roger Huerta where he pulled off the upset over the former UFC title contender. Curran reached the finals where he won a controversial decision over Toby Imada. Curran was out of action for nearly 10 months before eventually challenging Eddie Alvarez for the Bellator lightweight championship. Curran’s lack of experience and size became apparent as he lost via unanimous decision. Curran announced his move down to the featherweight division where he competed in Bellator’s Summer Series tournament. Curran defeated veterans Luis Palomino and Ronnie Mann to earn a spot in the finals opposite Brazilian phenom Marlon Sandro. Curran stood in the pocket with Sandro, testing Sandro’s dangerous knockout power and in a stunning upset, Curran scored the 2nd round head kick knockout. Curran now awaits his featherweight championship opportunity where he will face off with Joe Warren.
Curran looks to be primed for a long career as one of the top featherweight fighters in the world. Curran’s size, striking, and overall acumen to the fighting game are unusual for such a young fighter. Curran will not be moving over to the UFC anytime soon, but if her were, the stage would be set for an Aldo vs. Curran title match, following Curran’s knockout win over Aldo’s mentor, Marlon Sandro.
