Maiquel Falcao burst onto the UFC scene in 2010 with a dominating victory over Gerald Harris at UFC 123. Fans were hungry to see more of Falcao, but he was released following legal problems in his native Brazil. Falcao’s career has quickly come under fire as he suffered a submission loss to Antonio Braga Neto before being rushed to the hospital due to supposed overtraining. Falcao’s career looks to be back on track though as he signed with Bellator in 2011 and is set to take partake in their next middleweight tournament. Prior to Falcao signing with the UFC in 2010, he had built a reputation as a heavyweight knockout artist, going 25-3 overall, with 2 of those losses coming against future UFC veteran Fabio Maldonado, while the other was later avenged. Falcao made the extreme weight cut from undersized heavyweight to middleweight as he faced off with rising contender Gerald Harris in his UFC debut. Falcao stunned Harris with punches and nearly had him choked out as the round was prematurely stopped. Falcao played it safe in the final round as he knew he had done enough to win the decision.
Falcao’s only UFC performance has drawn enough hype that fans are already clamoring for a possible Falcao vs. Lombard showdown should Falcao win the Bellator tournament. Bellator has stepped up to the plate in signing Falcao and fans will now get to see whether Falcao can live up to the potential he showed in his brief UFC career.
