2012 Forecast:
Joachim Hansen was once considered to be one of the top lightweights in the world before making his move to the featherweight division in 2010. Hansen made his MMA debut in 1999, quickly making his way to the Shooto promotion. Hansen defeated Rumina Sato before winning the Shooto welterweight (154 lbs.) championship by unseating Takanori Gomi via majority decision. Hansen went on to lose the title in his next fight against Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, but soon rebounded by defeating J.Z. Cavalcante and Caol Uno. Hansen moved over to the PRIDE promotion where he scored a knockout victory over Masakazu Imanari in his debut. Hansen entered the PRIDE 2005 lightweight Grand Prix, defeating Yves Edwards in the opening round before losing to Hayato Sakurai. Hansen began to struggle, going 2-3 in his next 5 fights, though one of the losses was via disqualification to Tatsuya Kawajiri. Hansen looked to redeem himself by entering Dream’s 2008 lightweight Grand Prix. He started out strong, defeating Kotetsu Boku, but soon dropped a close decision to Eddie Alvarez in a back-and-forth war. Hansen competed as a reserve for the eventual Grand Prix finals, and was surprisingly called upon to face Shinya Aoki after Eddie Alvarez was forced to bow out due to injury. Hansen had previously lost to Aoki earlier in his career, but this time, Hansen avoided the same mistakes and finished the submission star via 1st round TKO to become the new Dream lightweight champion. Hansen did not defend his belt for nearly 10 months, but upon his return, lost the title in a rematch with Aoki. Hansen dropped down to featherweight after the loss and was given an immediate title shot against Dream featherweight champion Bibiano Fernandes. In a split decision, Hansen came up short. Hansen lost his next fight as well to Hiroyuki Takaya via knockout. Hansen bounced back going 3-1 in hist last 4 fights with wins over Hideo Tokoro and Mitsuhiro Ishida, his only loss coming to Tatsuya Kawajiri via 3rd round submission.
Hansen’s career has been quiet as of late. He has revealed his distaste for the UFC in past interviews and seems content to fight on the Japanese fight scene. Hansen may be forced to fight elsewhere though as Japan’s fight scene has faded, and he is unlikely to find satisfactory compensation. Bellator could be a solid match for Hansen, but it remains to be seen how his career will play out. Hansen still possesses knockout power and solid submission skills, but he has been hard-pressed as of late to score highlight-reel knockouts that fans had grown accustomed to.
