2012 Forecast:
Muhammed Lawal, known as “King Mo,” is one of the most brash and talented stars in all of mixed martial arts. He is still flying under the radar due to him fighting outside of the UFC, but he seems destined for a big career in MMA. Lawal possesses an excellent wrestling pedigree and has quickly developed power in his hands. Lawal was thrown right into the fire, facing veteran Travis Wiuff in his first career MMA fight. Lawal won via TKO in the 1st round, immediately showing the MMA world that he would be a future force to be reckoned with. Lawal continued to rack up victories, eventually signing with Strikeforce in 2009. Lawal fought for the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in just his second fight in the promotion, defeating champion Gegard Mousasi via decision. Lawal was criticized for his win due to him relying heavily on his wrestling. Lawal would lose his title in his first defense to Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante and was ultimately forced to the sidelines due to knee surgery. “King Mo” finally made his return in 2011, knocking out undefeated BJJ star Roger Gracie in the 1st round.
Lawal has his sights set on a rematch with Cavalcante, but he has also made it known that he wants to fight in the UFC. Lawal signed an extension with Strikeforce that he did not seem happy about, but it should only be a matter of time before he eventually makes his way over to the octagon. Lawal’s wrestling would make him an instant title contender in the UFC. In addition, his big personality would likely translate well to potential pay-per-view buys should he ever fight for the title opposite Jon Jones.
