10 Best MMA Flyweight Prospects of 2014
#9: Nam Jin Jo
Nam Jin Jo’s record is very deceiving. Despite being just 8-6 overall, Nam has claimed recent wins over respected Flyweights Mikihito Yamagami and Shinichi “B.J.” Kojima. All but one of his career losses were at 135 lbs., and he was very competitive in nearly all of those fights. Nam is only 23 years old and was thrown into the deep end of sorts, which has been a penchant of his training camp Busan Team M.A.D. Nam is from South Korea and trains alongside current UFC fighters Dong Hyun Kim and Kyung Ho Kang. He has a very similar fighting style to Kim and Kang as he uses his takedowns, top control, and superior strength and conditioning to grind out his victories. Nam’s striking is still developing, but he is a game striker that is willing to take a few punches in order to seize the takedown. Had Nam faced easier competition throughout his career, he’d likely be on the UFC’s radar. Until then, Nam has to string together some victories in order to make up for his earlier career losses. It is well known that UFC matchmaker Joe Silva prefers to sign fighters with nearly unblemished records.
