B.J. Penn stunningly announced his retirement following his loss to Nick Diaz at UFC 137. Though most believe Penn will eventually make his return, there is reason to think that “The Prodigy” may be willing to walk away for good. Penn’s legacy is complete with past championship runs at lightweight and welterweight that have him considered a surefire Hall of Famer. Penn has always been described as on the most naturally talented fighters ever to compete in MMA, blessed with excellent flexibility and a granite chin. Penn was unpredictable at times, bouncing around weight classes and promotions. Penn was mired in a 1-3-1 slump, though his losses arguably came to some of the best fighters in the world. Penn would likely be an immediate title threat should he ever decide to return as a lightweight. Penn’s success always hinged on his desire and conditioning. When Penn was on, he was equally dangerous on his feet as he was on his ground with rare finishing ability. Penn’s move back to welterweight was indicative of his distaste for training and dieting. Penn could reasonably make the cut to 145 lbs. if he were truly serious about maximizing his physical gifts and skills.
