When the UFC Flyweight division was created, it was nearly a sure thing that Joseph Benavidez would be the inaugural champion. After unsuccessfully challenging Dominick Cruz twice for the Bantamweight title, Benavidez was finally able to compete amongst fighters his same size. What Benavidez did not count on was that Demetrious Johnson would also become such a force at 125 lbs. Following consecutive title losses to Johnson, Benavidez will likely be relegated to a title contender gatekeeper type role.
