Jose Aldo vs. Mark Hominick
Jose Aldo‘s(18-1) name has begun to surface on most p4p Top 10 lists, but something is still missing from Aldo’s resume. The missing link from Aldo’s rise through the MMA world is an adversary worthy of testing him. No one has stepped up to the plate to truly give Aldo the challenge he needs. Fedor had Nogueira, Liddell had Tito, GSP had Hughes, and now Silva had Sonnen. Yet Aldo awaits his challenger. Thus far, Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, and Manny Gamburyan have failed at threatening Aldo’s dominance, but now many think that challenger has surfaced in the form of Canadian veteran Mark Hominick(20-8).
Aldo went 8-0 in the now defunct WEC, capturing the title at the ripe age of 23 years old. Aldo’s 2 title defenses have inspired the awe of fans and peers in what was thought to be worthy challengers. Many believe that a strong grappler would give Aldo his biggest challenge, but now theories have shifted towards a similarly dangerous striker.
Hominick may not possess the overall quickness, nor arsenal of strikes, but he is accurate and powerful. Hominick also has a decent submission game that could prove critical if this fight goes to the ground. In addition, Hominick will have the crowd in his corner since this will take place in Canada.
The upset is there for the taking or at least that’s what the Aldo-doubters will say. Reasons are aplenty, such as: Aldo’s coming off an injury, Hominick will have the crowd advantage, Aldo’s first UFC title defense, Aldo will be making his UFC debut compared to Hominick’s prior 3-fight UFC experience. So, there will likely be a bit of added pressure, media, and expectations coming into this fight, but it is nearly impossible to doubt Aldo after watching him dismantle every opponent put before him.
