Bellator’s Pending Arrival on Spike

Bellator’s move to Spike is highly anticipated for fans that have become disenfranchised with the UFC or are simply looking to watch more MMA. Whether the UFC would like to admit or not, their departure to FOX, FX, and Fuel has not been popular with fans. It has been a nightmare for fans to follow as the UFC’s shows are scattered across Fox’s various channels with very similar sounding titles such as UFC on Fox, UFC on FX, and UFC on Fuel. It is too complicated even for the most committed of mixed martial arts fans. So, the point is, that the time is ripe for Bellator’s move to Spike. Spike did an amazing job helping build the UFC’s brand and promotion. They are likely confident that they can replicate the same formula for Bellator.

Bellator has signed a few well-known names as of late (Muhammed Lawal, Paul Daley). They are in need of star power after losing Hector Lombard to the UFC, with Eddie Alvarez possibly to follow. Bellator’s product is unique enough that they do not directly compete with the UFC beyond the competition for signing free agents and prospects.

Something that has not been played up as much is Bellator’s likely relationship with Spike’s TNA wrestling. We have already seen Lawal sign a multi-platform deal that allows him to compete for both promotions. Joe Warren had a previous guest appearance on TNA and more Bellator fighters are likely to follow. Whether MMA fans like to admit it or not, there is still a strong alliance between professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. Part of PRIDE’s success in Japan was their appeal to professional wrestling audiences. The UFC has also seen the power of professional wrestling’s crossover appeal with Brock Lesnar.

Bellator has a golden opportunity to capture a new audience. The question will be if they develop the star power needed to create the appeal for mainstream acceptance.
