What Should be GSP’s Next Step?
Option 1: The Super Fight with MW champion Anderson Silva
Dana White wants it as do a large portion of MMA fans. Yet, there is also a group hoping that GSP vs. Silva remains fantasy rather than reality. GSP moving up in weight to face the #1 fighter in the world, what sense does that make after GSP barely survived a Carlos Condit head kick? I admit, I wanted to see the fight too, but that was before UFC 154 transpired. Now, I realize that GSP is at an extreme disadvantage if he cannot use his size and wrestling to take Silva down. In addition, GSP and Silva have an obligation to defend their titles, especially GSP, considering #1 contender Johny Hendricks recent run in the division. Dana White sees dollar signs, but what is best for the long-term viability of two of their most dominant talents should one be defeated decisively?
Option 2: Defend his championship against #1 contender Johny Hendricks
If GSP wants to return to the cage sooner rather than later, this is the fight that makes the most sense. Hendricks is hot off a KO over Martin Kampmann and seems to be the last man standing in an ultra-competitive UFC welterweight division.
Option 3: Take time off, and await the winner of Hendricks/Diaz
This could be the most logical step for GSP. He just came off a long, grueling training camp and rehabilitation effort to get back into the cage. GSP did not even want to discuss what was next for him. He needs to take a vacation and figure out how long he wants to keep fighting for. GSP also knows that a fight with Nick could mean big money. Therefore, by taking a few months off, Diaz could potentially return from suspension and step right into a #1 contenders fight opposite Johny Hendricks.
Option 4: Retire
Why is this considered an option? GSP has made it known that he wants to settle down and have a family soon. He has already made his millions. He has already won the sport’s greatest prize in the form of a UFC championship. What else does GSP have to prove? Some fans feel as if GSP needs to disregard his winning strategy to fight like Diego Sanchez or Chris Lytle. GSP is who he is today because he has maximized his ability to avoid putting himself at risk of losing. Anderson Silva does the same thing with his head movement that GSP does with his world class wrestling. GSP is a winner, and when he feels that his time may be nearing an end I have no doubt that he will hang up the gloves. GSP will not be fighting into his late 30’s as other former champions have done. He’s saved his money, he is an icon in Canada, and will surely find success in whatever path he chooses after he retires. GSP is closer to retirement than we all think. Looking at his bruised up face after UFC 154, one has to wonder how much GSP is willing to risk his long-term health and legacy by fighting the next wave of contenders.
