The Independent Fight Scene

The top three fights on the independent circuit part as follows…

Marius Zaromskis versus Jordan Mein

Zaromskis was thought to be a smaller version of a prime Mirko Cro Cop. Though Zaromskis found initial success, his shortcomings were soon exposed. Zaromskis does not have the size to be a top contender at 170. His current contract status with Strikeforce is unknown at this juncture following two losses to Evangelista Santos and Nick Diaz. His opponent, fast rising Canadian Jordan Mein has won eight of his last nine fights, with the only loss coming to Jason high. Main is likely one win away from a UFC contract so there is a lot at stake in this fight. Both fighters prefer to utilize their striking, though Mein will have the size and reach advantage over Zaromskis. This should be a solid battle on the independent scene.

Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou versus Martin Desilets

Sokoudjou is looking to resurrect his career after struggling with the burden of early success. Sokoudjou is coming off a trademark huge upset win over Polish prospect Jan Blachowicz. If Sokoudjou can tight up his weak areas(conditioning, ground game), his career might still have legs to it. His opponent, Martin Desilets is going to look to control this fight on the ground and negate Sokoudjou’s power advantage. Desilets was once thought to be one of best fighters in Canada, but after losses to Roger Hollett and Travis Galbraith his career is quickly fading.

Drew Fickett versus Brian Cobb

Drew Fickett’s comeback story continues to evolve. Fickett’s struggles are well-chronicled, and that’s what makes his 5-fight win streak remarkable. Fickett may be too controversial for the UFC to sign, but he will look to force the issue should he continue winning. Also, working his way back to the UFC is his opponent Brian Cobb. His recent wins over Rad Martinez and Kazunori Yokota are nothing to sneeze at, and a win over Fickett on short notice may be just what he needs to gain Zuffa’s attention.
