Michael Chandler is one of the rising stars in the Bellator promotion after defeating Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title. Chandler wrestled collegiately at Missouri University before making the quick transition to MMA in 2009. Following just 3 fights, all wins via stoppage, Chandler signed with Bellator. Chandler won his first two fights in the promotion before taking part in its season 4 lightweight tournament as a virtually unknown prospect. Chandler won his his 1st round matchup by submitting grappler Marcin Held. Chandler moved on to score consecutive unanimous decision victories over Lloyd Woodard and Patricky “Pitbull” Freire to win the tournament and a future title shot against Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez. Chandler came into the fight as a heavy underdog, but after weathering Alvarez’s early strikes, he turned the tables by submitting Alvarez in the 4th round in an amazing comeback victory.
An immediate rematch with Alvarez looks unlikely due to Bellator’s tournament format and Alvarez’s pending free agency, so Chandler could enjoy a lengthy reign as Bellator’s lightweight champion. Chandler possesses outstanding all-around skills. Despite having a wrestling base, Chandler has worked tirelessly at improving his striking and submission skills. Chandler has a non-stop motor and iron chin that seemed to break Alvarez’s will at times. Though we won’t see Chandler competing against any of the UFC’s lightweight fighters, he definitely has the skills to compete with any lightweight in the world today.
